Feed the Multiverse and Generative AI
I’ve had a few clients now ask me if they’re allowed to send me AI images as examples for what they want on their map.
I’ve had a few clients obviously using AI to organize their pitch.
I’ve had a few people ask me if I use AI???
So it’s probably time for this page to exist.
You (my client) and AI
You generated a perfect image that explains what you want better than words. Yes, you can send that to me.
You got ChatGPT to write up a bunch of worldbuilding for you. Yes, you can send that to me, although consider: I do also include worldbuilding as a service. You do not have to have a comprehensive pitch!
You generated some icons or artwork that you want placed on your map. Yes, you can also request that from me, but it’s okay if you send me components to include.
You made a bunch of placeholder art with AI that you now want me to remake.
I don’t mind how you choose to incorporate AI in your own artistic process. Although I would like if you don’t use that to take the parts of my job that I think are fun away from me! Sending me generated inspo does not take away my fun, but I actually love making up place names and filling in the gaps in your worldbuilding!

Me (the artist) and AI in my map creation process
A couple people have asked if my maps are generated, and I can say safely, no. I have been making cartography since 2009. My art is in the AI training database (I know this, I found it). My maps are human made, created uniquely by me for my client.
I have been using the same techniques in my maps for many years now and I take joy in doing so. To outsource that to generation would remove the part of my work that I enjoy from me. The things I would like AI to do for me are like… my dishes and taxes.
This is my process:
I am a digital artist.
Most of my art is digital painting and drawings done on a Wacom tablet in Clip Studio Paint, with vector text done in Affinity Studio.
Tools I use include a Wacom Cintiq, a Tourbox Neo, a 3DConnection Mouse, and my weird Jabberwocky keyboard.
Programs I use include Clip Studio Paint, Affinity Suite, Adobe Suite, Other World Mapper, Gaea, World Creator 2 and 3, and Blender with numerous plugins. Occasionally DungeonDraft.
Occasionally I hand draw elements with an ink pen and pencil, or paint elements with watercolor or acrylic, scan them in and implement them into a digital map.

Not all of my maps have 100% unique components. Some of my styles use “stamp” mapmaking, with brushes I’ve made in Clip Studio Paint, or Other World Mapper or DungeonDraft. I don’t use Inkarnate or Wonderdraft personally, although I do make assets for these programs. This might happen in my lower cost maps, or maps that require a faster turnaround.

Some of my styles use “procedural generation” with World Creator and Gaea, programs used for video game mapmaking. This can be seen in my more realistic satellite style maps. Because I am using a program anyone can use, similar looks may arise. This procedural generation is a 3D art technique and does not involve machine learning.

I also do realistic atlas-style world map cartography using digital elevation data and vector datasets to capture roads and rivers. Since these datasets are available to anyone, it may result in similar aesthetics to other maps.

If you still have concerns about whether my maps are AI: I can explain how anything I’ve made was created, provide layers for a lot of my work (not quite all has been saved, but much of it). While I do not have timelapses of everything, I record them on request when creating a new map.
If you still have concerns, I am also happy to do your commission live on stream, or, if you live in Winnipeg, come on over and watch me draw!

So what is Feed the Multiverse’s AI stance?
If you want a uniquely human-crafted artwork, that is what you will receive if you hire me!
My work is not completely AI-free, because I respect my client’s creative process may include use of it.
For example:
When creating this game board, my client came to me with a folder of AI placeholders and hired me to begin creating new unique items. Because the art was never finished, there are still AI placeholders.
Hopefully that clears up any questions and concerns.
