Somehow, despite this being one of the only maps I’ve made that random people have actually bought as a poster, the Continent of Ithos managed to spend years missing from my portfolio. Time to correct that. Yes yes it was made in 2020… I know… I know.
I created this fantasy continent map for author John Bierce for The Lost City of Ithos, book 4 of the Mage Errant series. The commission needed to turn an already well-developed fictional continent into something that would work inside the novel while still feeling like a map readers could pore over on its own.
Ithos gave me a lot to play with: dense cities, mountain ranges, unusual coastlines and waterways, along with the stranger visual language of the setting. The finished piece includes details such as dragons and a kraken, while the border developed into a geometric protective-circle motif that ended up fitting the setting much better than a conventional decorative frame.
The project also had to work for print. I supplied a high-resolution version for the book along with crops suitable for a two-page spread, and after Mage Errant 4 released, John heard from readers who wanted a copy of the map for their wall. I adapted the artwork into a slightly wider print composition so the map could live outside the book as well.
